I love flatbreads – they can really turn a simple dinner into so much more. From filling flatbreads with meats and salads to dipping in sauces or curries. And shop-brought ones just aren’t that nice, let’s face it. Make them for yourselves at home with this easy flatbread recipe (no yeast) and see how delicious and versatile they are.
Some flatbreads are really thick and doughy and these tend to have yeast in them. I find these flatbreads don’t work so well for wrapping kebabs or my Indian spiced chicken which is what I like to use them for most. This recipe has the added ingredient of baking powder instead of using the raising agent of yeast. Adding 1 tsp of baking powder makes these flatbreads soft and fluffy and really pliable for making wraps – really good wraps!

How to make these easy flatbreads no yeast recipe
If you’ve never attempted to make flatbreads before, then let me reassure you that these easy flatbreads are really simple to make and you only need a few ingredients – flour, salt, butter, baking powder, and milk, plus a rolling pin and a non-stick frying pan. Combine the wet ingredients together, and add these to the dry ingredients to form a dough. It will come together easily and doesn’t need much kneading.
Once you’ve let the dough rest for around half an hour or so, cut it into four pieces, roll it into balls and flatten each piece with the palm of your hand, then roll it out into rounds to the size of your frying pan. You can brush a tiny bit of oil on the pan, but you don’t need to, it can make them oily. The flatbreads begin to cook when you can see the dough bubbling up in sections, flip the flatbread over and push down again the puffed-up bubbles. It only needs around 2 minutes on each side.
How many flatbreads will this recipe make?
This easy flatbread recipe will make four really decent-sized pieces enough for four people. Sometimes when I make a batch, I like to double the quantities so that there are some spare for hungry people or extra to be used for lunch later in the week.

How do you store the flatbreads?
You can make extra dough and freeze it, defrosting it before you intend to make flatbreads – you may need a little more flour when rolling. You can also freeze the flatbreads once made by wrapping them well in clingfilm. Just reheat them in a hot frying pan or skillet.
If you want to use them a few days later, you can wrap them up and put them in the fridge and reheat them the same way as above or for a minute in a microwave.

Easy flatbreads with no yeast
Ingredients
- 300 g plain flour extra for dusting
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 50 g butter no salt
- 185 ml milk
Instructions
- Add the butter to the milk and pop the container in the microwave on a high heat until the butter is melted. Mix well.
- Meanwhile, in a large bowl mix the flour, salt and baking powder together.

- Add the melted butter and milk to the flour mixture and combine to form a dough. Be careful, the dough may feel hot because of the butter.

- Sprinkle the work surface with flour then knead for a few minutes until the dough is smooth. Form into a ball and wrap in cling film. Let the dough rest for at least 30 minutes or up to an hour at room temperature.

- After it’s rested, place the dough onto a floured work surface and cut it into four equal pieces. Take each piece, roll it into a ball. Flatten with your hand, and then using a rolling pin, roll out into rounds to your desired size – I aim for one that will fit into my frying pan.

- Heat a non-stick frying pan until it’s very hot. Carefully place one flatbread into the pan. After about a minute or so, bubble spots will start rising. Press down on the bubbles with a fish slice and then flip over and do the same on the other side. Once done, place on a plate and keep covered with a tea towel to keep the flatbreads soft.

- Repeat the same with the remaining pieces.
