We love banana bread in our house – and we make it pretty often because I always have old ripe bananas to use up. Rather than chuck them out, it’s the perfect excuse for a sweet baked treat. So if you’re looking for a delicious and easy-to-make cake, that’s also fun to make with the kids, try this recipe for banana bread with chocolate chips. With just a few simple ingredients and some basic baking skills, you can create a tasty banana loaf that’s perfect for any occasion. So grab your apron and get ready to bake up a slice of heaven…

Is this banana bread with chocolate recipe hard to make?
Not at all. There’s no creaming butter or sugar – or even any complicated prep. If you’re a novice at baking then this is a simple cake recipe that will always give you excellent results every single time.
Get your ingredients for this banana bread with chocolate chips
Before you start baking, make sure you have all the necessary ingredients on hand. You’ll need:
-
chocolate chips of your choice
-
ripe bananas
-
self-raising flour
-
vegetable oil
-
baking powder
-
golden caster sugar or caster sugar
-
eggs
Preheat your oven to 160°c (350°F) and grease and line a loaf tin. Now you’re ready to start making this chocolate chip banana bread recipe.
Mash your ripe bananas and mix in the wet ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, mash your 3 ripe bananas until they are smooth and free of lumps. Then add the eggs, vegetable oil, and sugar. Mix everything together until it is well combined. I like to use a balloon whisk as I find it easier. Now you’re ready to add in the flour.

Add the flour to your batter
It’s now time to add the flour and baking powder to the wet ingredients. Stir well until the batter has thickened. Add the chocolate chips and combine. Then pour it into the prepared loaf tin.

Smooth out the top of the batter with a spatula to ensure it is evenly distributed in the tin. Bake your banana bread with chocolate chips in a preheated oven at 160°c/320°F for 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean. Depending on your oven this could take up to an hour. If you feel the top is getting a little brown but it’s still not baked, place a piece of foil over the top to stop it burning.
Let the bread cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes before removing it and slicing it into delicious, chocolatey pieces.
What to serve with this banana bread
Well, I’m British so I think a thick slice goes perfectly with a hot cup of tea or ‘brew’ as we like to say. My kids love it, too, when I wrap a slice up and put it in their lunch boxes. Afternoon tea, snacks, picnics, after-dinner dessert – this banana bread is great at any time.
Will this banana cake keep?
Yes, banana bread can be kept for a few days if stored properly. To keep banana bread fresh, wrap it tightly in cling film and store it in an airtight container at room temperature. Banana bread can also be frozen and stored in the freezer for up to 3 months. To defrost, simply remove the banana bread from the freezer and let it thaw at room temperature for a few hours. Great if you’d like to batch bake.

Hi Ting,
I made the banana bread with dark chocolate chips.
I used two small bread tins for the mix and the same cooking time and heat as per your recipe.
Wow! The banana bread was delicious.
Im going to make it again without chocolate today.
Thanks.
Hi Clive, so pleased that you loved the recipe, it’s definitely one of our favourites. And a great way to use up old bananas.
I’ve followed this recipe to a T and it’s still in the oven after 1.5hrs as it just won’t cook!! What have I done wrong????
I’m assuming you’ve got the oven at the right temperature? 160c or 320F?
